The 'Anna' song
This is the second time HANK LOCKLIN has recorded
the ANNA song. This beautiful rendition is a duet with Grand Ole'
Opry legend, Jan Howard. Hank first recorded ANNA on RCA. The international
hit song then had a big band sound with Danny Davis and the Nashville
Brass. Here is the real story:
Anna Prince was living near Andrews North Carolina,
when Hank called from Nashville. " I have just finished recording
your ANNA song. There's something special about this song.
Do you want to hear it now?"
"Oh Hank, please can I?" Anna replied breathlessly.
She recalled the times before when he called to let her hear his
new recording of a song she had written for him. She pressed her
ear to the phone, hardly able to breathe, as Hank sang:
"Anna, stand beside me, lift your eyes to
the window, look and see,
Anna let me hold you, and for the thousandth time Anna, lean on
me.
Anna, see the cornfield, see how summer's brought
a million ears so fine,
Anna, the stalks are browning, they're singing the last verse of
summertime.
Anna, childhood sweetheart, a freckled face that
liked to romp and play,
Beautiful hair of silver, you've been mine for fifty years today........."
When the song finished, Hank continued, " The
last two songs I recorded of yours made number one hits in England.
I expect the ANNA song will do the same. Ann, you said you wrote
this song about your parents, but there must be more. Tell me what
really inspired you to write this song."
"Hank, when I was a little girl, Mama said to
me, 'Anna, God gives each child a personal Bible verse.' 'Mama,
would you read my Bible verse to me, please Mama?'
''Yes Anna, here's how it works: Proverbs chapter 21 is for boys
and Proverbs 31 is for girls. So, since you were born on the May
28th, Anna, your Bible verse is Proverbs 31:28. Anna, this verse
is a prophecy of what your future will be. Anna listened and watched
as her mother opened her Bible and began to read:
"Her children arise up and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praiseth her." Proverbs 31:28
Anna finished telling Hank about this Bible verse.
Hank said quietly, "Now I understand. I knew there was something
special about this song."

HANK LOCKLIN SINGS ANNA 'PRINCE'
Grand Ole' Opry legend Hank Locklin has just released
a song called ANNA. The song was written by our own Anna Prince.
This song has a long history which can be seen on our linking story
called "A Song Called Anna."
The story goes like this. Hank calls Anna last week
and says, "Hey, This is Hank Locklin. When can I be a guest
on your television show, 'Real Heroes of Country Music?' I am promoting
my new album called Generations in Song."
Hank continues, "The 'Anna ' song is really getting
good reponse. They played it on WSM recently. It is real popular
in Barbados! Of course, they are still playing the1970 version of
"Anna" Remarkably, it is still played and very popular
in Barbados. Some foreign countries seem to worship that song. I
took a call from Australia yesterday about it that lasted twenty
minutes. "
Anna Prince replied, "Hank, I am thrilled with
your new version of "Anna" with Jan Howard, making it
a duet. Your voice sounds great! I wish you the best of luck with
your new album.
Hank. How about appearing on "Real Heroes"
television show next week? I'd love to have you as my guest!"
Later, Hanks's son Hank Adam Locklin, who produced the album,
called Prince last week and said, "We are considering releasing
your song "Anna" as a single. From the response we are
getting, it could make Dad a smash hit. You wrote a good song. But
then, so are the other RCA hits songs you wrote for Dad such as
"I Feel a Cry Coming On". England ate that song up. And
don't forget "The Best Part of Loving you" also went to
number one, didn't it?"
Prince replied, 'Yes, Adam, both songs charted number one in England
and top ten in Ireland and Germany. Hanks, earlier version of "Anna",
also recorded on RCA was a number one hit in New Zealand and Ireland,
among other places. You must be proud of your father." Adam
Locklin replied, "Yes I am." Anna said, "I'd like
to help get Hank Locklin inducted into the Country Music Hall of
Fame. Lets work on that. In the meantime, lets get this music out
to the people."
